BEWARE OF HEART ATTACKS – PHYSICAL EXERTION

Posted under Herbal by admin

An elderly physician once told me, to my amazement, that he never came across a case of heart attack among his patients during the early years of his practice. And this was despite the fact that country people had to work much harder physically at that time because modern labour-saving machinery was not available. Why then, we might ask, do heart attacks rank as one of the most frequent causes of death today? Obviously, it cannot be linked to physical exertion from everyday labour, because modern technology has reduced the need for us to work as hard as our forefathers had to.

This question reminds me of a talk I heard during my stay in Vermont, the United States. Professor Raab, the famous research scientist who specialises in blood circulation, spoke about the ‘loafer’s heart’ of our generation. He did not mean, however, that the ‘loafer’s heart’ is a result of ‘loafing around’; this certainly would not be true in today’s increasingly busy world. Rather, it is the result of one-sided activity and a lack of exercise outdoors in the fresh air. The proper balance between exertion and relaxation has become distorted, disturbing the harmony of the rhythm of rest and activity.
